Played pitch & listened to the Lewis - Louis fight. Louis won in 2 minutes. Home at 11:30.

My comment:
"load of cobs." Had kind of forgotten about using cobs in a stove! ;-)

They listened to the short fight on the radio.

Fun to find the fight listed under Joe Louis in Wikipedia:

"World Light Heavyweight Champion John Henry Lewis who, attempting to move up a weight class, was knocked out in the first round by Louis on January 25, 1939."

Have you listened to a boxing match on the radio? I remember doing so, many, many years ago. I seemed to lose interest when they came on television! ;-)

From Wikipedia:
"The organization began as the National Foundation for Infantile Paralysis. The name "March of Dimes"—coined in the late 1930s by vaudeville star Eddie Cantor as a play on the contemporary newsreel series "The March of Time"—was originally used for the foundation's annual fundraising event that requested each child donate a dime.

75 Years Ago Today

Jan 18, 1939

This entry is a post from the diary of my mother, twenty year old Eileen KINNICK, 75 Years Ago this date. She kept a diary from 1932 as a freshman in high school until she left us, too early, in 1999.
Now we are beginning 1939 - the year I was born, on July 1 - Bring it on! ;-)

Here is the daily entry for Wednesday, Jan 18:

Birthday noted: Mrs. Lee Brutsche

I didn't get up until 9:00. Ate breakfast, did the separator and started patching Pete's old jacket. Got dinner. Ate, did dishes, Pete went up home. He & Pop & Toots went in to the bank & talked to Dad all afternoon. About getting things settled & us getting something of our own. I finished putting buttons on Pete's old jacket and then played the piano and read awhile. Out doing my chores. Pete came about 5:30. Had French Toast for supper & then Pete milked while I did the dishes. Pete shaved and we both took baths. To bed at 10:00.

My comments: Very substantive entry. I can just feel the tension in her as she wrote this. I'd love to be able to hear that afternoon discussion. All afternoon. Wow!

Pete's mother actually owned the Homeplace farm; gift from her grandfather Miller (a long story).
With her early, unexpected death, the ownership interests included all the children, under intestate laws. Now that "the children" were all grown, it was time for some of them to "get something out" of their interest.

Eventually, some siblings bought out the interests of others. Mom and Dad wanted to have money to put a down payment on their own place. They did that, in a couple of years. Safe to assume that moving in this direction was a part of these discussions.

Notice how Mom did "busy work," and talked about it, while she waited to hear how the discussions had gone, during that long afternoon, at home, alone.

French Toast: Yum! ;-)

Here is the daily entry for Tuesday, Jan 17:

Birthday noted: Howard (hired man)

Pete up at 6:00 & me at 6:30.
Made 3 apricot pies, did separator, Betty, LVene, Pauline here. Had steak, spuds, gravy, mac & cheese, lettuce, jell, pickles, apricot pie.
Didn't do dishes until middle of the afternoon. I darned my good gloves. Had men move piano into the dining room.
Ate & then Pete milked. Were going to the Gray games but we were too tired. 11 men to dinner. I finished darning my good gloves while Pete read the paper. Ate our oranges & went to bed early.

My comments: Did you notice she never mentions WHY 11 men were there for the noon meal?? Nice that they moved the piano for her… but, certainly some big activity!! I am really curious, but guess we'll never know. ;-)

I went to the Doctor at 2:30. Didn't get to see him until 3:15. Perfectly all right. Surely glad. Got Hot Dogs and came home. Kinda peeved cause Max & Orrin kept saying how late it was etc. Got all right again though. Made some sugar cookies for supper. Pete chored. Fixed account books. Looked at catalogs. To bed at 10:00.

Much interaction with sister-in-law LVene! They went to "club" together, both elected to offices, for the new year, it appears. Star Federated, or which one? We'll see…

I'd like to see the "pictures" they looked at, after Victor and Gertrude Ford left. ;-)

Date cake for 'lunch' - mid-afternoon snack, ...nice, for sure... ;-)

Some talk of our getting lites down here. In to town & washed. Pete up home. Finished wash before dinner. Clothes didn't dry very well. Down town in pm. Got groceries & had Jennie set my hair & roll the ends. Up home again & did the whole ironing. Made a little pop corn. Pete came about 6:00. Talked until 6:30. Home & Pete chores while I did dishes. Ate poached eggs & then did the dishes again. Late with the work. Wrote in diary & budget books & then went to bed early.

My comments: Confirms that they didn't have electricity at this house, yet. It was kind of remote. A good mile or mile and a half from any other house, as I recall, even in later years.

Good to see they got back to the "books" they started working on the night before.

Haven't done a "Poached Egg" image yet, so here goes:

Do you eat poached eggs? Do they look anything like this? ;-)

75 Years Ago Today - Eileen's Diary - Jan 8, 1939

75 Years Ago Today
Eileen's Diary
Jan 8, 1939

This entry is a post from the diary of my mother, twenty year old Eileen KINNICK, 75 Years Ago this date. She kept a diary from 1932 as a freshman in high school until she left us, too early, in 1999.
Now we are beginning 1939 - the year I was born, on July 1 - Bring it on! ;-)

Here is the daily entry for Sunday, Jan 8:

Slept late. Merle here a minute in morning. Had fried chicken for dinner. Here alone. After dinner Pete up to Verle's to help Deppman load a cow & then down here after one. Went riding up past Ed's. In to town & got ice. Home. Made a berry pie & froze 2 quts. ice cream. Pete milked & then we were fixing out our expenses accounts when Ed & Elmer came. Played bridge & ate pie ala mode. They left at 1:00.

My comments: Assume Deppman had the truck to take two cows to whom they were sold.

Berry pie & ice cream sounds pretty good! ;-)

Here is the daily entry for Saturday, Jan 7:

Up in pretty good time. Leo Byering here to look at the jersey.
Pete over to B. Johnsons after the hogs. I scrubbed & waxes dining room floor & then we went into town & ate. Bussy & Mom came out with us. Painted some of the kitchen. Pete made new nests. Made supper, ate, took Mom & Bussy in. Got a chicken from the locker & came home. Played Old Sol awhile and then went to bed.

My comments: Busy work day for new farm wife.

"Pete made new nests" "Got a chicken…" Just too much for me. Thinking about chickens…

Had to pull this image out, from a few years later…  ;-)

Here is the daily entry for Friday, Jan 6:

Up at 9:00. Did the usual work & then we went to Carroll to get corn money started.
Ate a good dinner at the Carroll Cafe. Pete got a new sweater, I got 4 plates & card table. Stopped at Frank & Clarabelle's on the way home. Home & chores & then to Viola B.B. games. Not very good ones. Home to bed.

My comments: "… to get corn money started." I like the sounds of that! ;-)

I do wonder which sweater Dad got on this trip! ;-)

Frank & Clarabelle Clayburg… always talked of as close personal friends, of course; another young couple on a farm.

A card table - Great! They played lots of card games and other games. Will be nice to have.

Pete up home after he chores. I did up my work, scrubbed the kitchen floor, made a caramel nut cake. Had tenderloin (fresh) for supper. Folks here at nite awhile. They left early & we went to bed.

My comments: Ah, fresh tenderloin - pork, I would assume! Yum! ;-)

Bet her "caramel nut cake" was yummy, as well! Suppose it looked like this - probably not, but who really know... Great walnuts on top... ;-)

Here is the daily entry for Wednesday, Jan 4:

Rained in the nite. Real foggy. Pete didn't get up until nearly 8:00 and I didn't get up 'till 9:00. I went in town & Pete went up home and butchered. Down town awhile. Beat Mom 4 times in checkers. Mom not feeling very good.
Pete & I ate a lunch in with folks. Came home and chores. Went to bed early.

My comments: Hey - they ate "lunch" - how about that?! ;-)

"Pete went up home and butchered." Assume they butchered a pig. Wanted to show a pig hanging from a tree - but too gross… so went with how it would be cut up...

Now we are beginning 1939 - the year I was born, on July 1 - Bring it on! ;-)

Here is the daily entry for Tuesday, Jan 3:

Pete up at 7:30. Me at 9:00. In to wash at 10:00. I didn't feel very good so Mom did it. Really a big one too. I got dinner. Did dishes. Mom went to Aid Society at Wolfe's. I did most of my ironing. Had a lot. Pete came at 4:30. Home, ate supper before Pete milked. Ate nuts and listened to the radio until 9:30 and then went to bed.

My comments: She said "Ate nuts…" What this made me think of is Smith Family Christmas gathering - at Toots', or Irenes' or LVenes' houses - alway had bowls of nuts in shells with a nut cracker… hadn't thought of the particular memory, before. I'm sure Mom was eating walnuts, but, here is what came to my mind:

Today begins 1939 - the year I was born, on July 1 - Bring it on! ;-)

Here is the daily entry for Monday, Jan 2:

[Noted as birthday of "Jean's Bob" - Jean Kupka Gunnar, her son Bob]

Up at 9:00. To town. Got groceries and took the cream in. Up home a minute. Didn't feel very good. Ate dinner & then I slept 'till 2:30. Pete fixed the medicine cabinet and made a lamp shelf. We painted the wash stand, shelf, woodbox & finished the 1st coat on the w.w. Pete cleaned the chicken house. Did dishes & swept. Ed Kult came while Pete was emptying the milk. Played checkers, bridge, and rummy until 1:00.

My comments: The rest seemed to energize her for the rest of the day.

There is that "w.w." reference, again… ??

Decided to share her "address book" - kinda' interesting, to me… some friends, some family. ;-)
She doesn't mention writing letters as much as she did before she married. ;-)

My comments: Happy New Year! Played games all day with "family!" What fun! ;-)

Starting a new year as a married woman! My favorite year, for some reason...  ;-)
