April 30, 1939

This entry is a post from the diary of my mother, twenty year old Eileen KINNICK, 75 Years Ago this date. She kept a diary from 1932 as a freshman in high school until she left us, too early, in 1999.

Here is the daily entry for Sunday, April 30:

Pete up at 6:30. Had to shut up another pig so it made us a little late to church. Really a swell day. Down home & so we stayed to dinner. Home about 3:30. Pete built some fence. I did dishes, separator. Got supper. 10 more little pigs. Through with chores in good time so we went in to town. Rode around awhile, got popcorn. Sat in middle of street by Lyric. Got pint of ice cream. Home to bed at 9:30.

My comments:

Sounds like they had a pleasant, enjoyable evening after a busy day.

10 more little pigs... more money in the pocket in the future!! ;-)

Looks like these three were playing in the mud! ;-)

Real nice out only windy. Took cookies to food sale. Mom & Bussy came out with me. Let chickens out. Pete worked on tractor, cleaned out chicken house & plowed garden. Took team up home.
Mom had head ache at nite. Dad came for them. Had 9 more little pigs. Did dishes while Pete read a story. Worked on books, took baths & went to bed at 11:00.

My comments:

Another busy day on the farm… tractor, chicken house, garden, team, pigs…

A generic chicken house of the time...

Pete worked on the tractor all day. Windy but not very cold. Mr. Cooly here awhile in pm. Made choc. cookies for food sale tomorrow. In to town a minute with Pete after new bearing. Ate supper, took baths & went to bed early.

My comments:

Cooley was Methodist Minister, as I recall.

This is supposed to be the tractor Dad had in 1939... a Regular, I believe. Was it the same one he still had 10 years later, as a utility tractor - that I learned, with rubber tires??? ;-)

Here is the daily entry for Thursday, April 20:

Did usual work in morning. To town a minute. Took things in for Gleaner's class. Pete discing & harrowing oats east of barn.
LVene, Margaret & Polly came while I was scrubbing. Curled their hair. Finished making smock. Ironed them. Got ready to go to S.S. party at Glenn & Ruth's. Had a wiener roast. 21 there. Home at 12:30.

My comments:

First mention of "Gleaner's class."

She curled a lot of hair! ;-)

"Glenn and Ruth" Bolger, of course, became my in-laws. Nancy was born just 33 days after me. So, whereas Mom was 6 1/2 month pregnant, Ruth was 5 1/2 months along, if I counted right!

Ruth on left, Glenn on right, his sister, Clare, in middle.
Carolyn and Bob?? late in 1938, perhaps

I didn't get up until 8:30. Cold out. Most of snow leaving. Did usual work. Pete fixing sow pens. Ate, did dishes, scrubbed, sewed on smock & skirt.
Enterprise contest man here. Lost 2 chicks out of the bunch. Pete chores. At nite, Pete shaved, we took our baths & went to bed.

My comments:

Assume that sow was not supposed to be in the straw stack where she had her pigs!

Sad to lose those chicks, of course. Did they buy what the "Enterprise contest man" was selling?

"Smock & skirt" for pregnant body, I assume. Suppose she used a pattern like this?

Ate, took baths & went to bed.

My comments:

Here is the daily entry for Saturday, April 15:

Rainy out. In to town & got Mom & Buss. Pete disced until Noon, then sowed crick bank & spaded the poultry yard & sowed it. Cleaned pantry in pm & tended chicks. Really tired at night. Dad came our for supper. Ate, did dishes. Folks left at 9:00. Took baths & went to bed.

My comments:

They certainly seem to have earned the "Really tired…" Busy day of accomplishments.

Stepping back, a bit, let's remember the ages of the people mentioned here, today.
Dad Paul was 47; Mom Dorothy was 52. Buzzy was 11, Pete 23 and Eileen 20.

Here they are, with Leo and Ida, about a year earlier.

Up in fair time. E. Reid came at 7:30. He wanted to know if we needed anything. Pete got some gun grease. Did up usual work. Pete harrowing over on the 80. Made cream pie & Baked beans. Pete home at 1:00. Ate, did dishes. Pete sowed oats east of barn. I went in town & got 50 Buff Orpingtons from Alex. Home & fixed all the chickens in the brooder house. Did chores. Ate supper. Talked awhile & went to bed.

My comments:

Ed Reid had the Sinclair bunk tank route then, I believe. Grease Gun grease is what he got, I assume. Probably a pail. I've actually filled a grease gun out of a pail of grease. Long time ago...  ;-)

Wondered what "Buff Orpingtons" were… turns out they are chickens… baby chicks, already hatched, it appears. They went directly to brooder house, apparently kept separate.

Good they did rat poison together, I would say.

My comments:

Sweet scenes in the evening… laid on straw pile… watched him… (he) read story… we ate our oranges… went to bed. Note: she was very pregnant by this time, as well...  ;-)

Found this image of disking a field… tractor is a little newer… but this is what it looked like, for sure, with dust flying about! ;-)

My comments:

Tired from the party the night before, I suspect. They need their rest.

Oats to sow… in the 1950s, we used a spreader on the back of a wagon, as I recall. We didn't have a separate spreading machine. I like to sit in the wagon of oat seed. ;-)

Eileen's Diary
Apr 2, 1939

This entry is a post from the diary of my mother, twenty year old Eileen KINNICK, 75 Years Ago this date. She kept a diary from 1932 as a freshman in high school until she left us, too early, in 1999.

Here is the daily entry for Sunday, Apr 2:

Did up chores. I made upside down cake. To church. 14 in our class. Dels & us in to folks to dinner. Pete, I, Roberta & Buss home in pm. Loaded 2 cows of Pops' for Omaha. Lil, Del, Folks here for lunch. Pete shot a duck. I went after sheep with them. Picked the duck. Ate lunch. To bed early.

My comments:

Oh my, so many activities. To church, again. Seems to be proud of their Sunday School Class. It did get them to going to church… successful, already.

Birthday noon meal in town. "Lunch" at theirs, in early evening. In between, loaded 2 cows and shot a duck!! "Picked" the duck!! Just like a chicken?? ;-)

Roberta was 5, Buzzy was 10 1/2 - very much like our Kaylee and Alex right now - interesting!! ;-)

And, the was an "upside down cake!" prepared for the birthday dinner, it appears. Just a typical Sunday in small town Iowa!! … in 1939! ;-)

Here is the daily entry for Saturday, Apr 1:

Birthday note: Delbert Ford

Up late. Did usual work. Bussy walked out in morning. Boys up home after trailer. Ate dinner, boys  in to town after sheep. Did dishes, cleaned the house. Made butterscotch pie. Folks came out after Bussy. Did dishes, took baths & went to bed early.

My comment:

Sheep are tempting, but the butterscotch pie caught me eye… for an image! Yum! ;-)

Not quite perfect, needs to be eaten... right?  ;-)
